Piano Tuning

Piano tuning is one aspect of piano technology which requires extensive training and Piano Tuningyears of experience to master. It is a field which does not require a license to practice professionally, therefore, many who simply have a love for music enter into the profession without adequate training. This is more a romantic notion than a professional attempt to learn a skill. There are computerized tuning devices utilized by the lesser experienced which should never be substituted for proper fundamental education. These devices will benefit the older veteran tuner once high frequency hearing begins to fade, and can also be used to decrease tuning time. In all cases they take a second chair to aural tuning techniques. Having a good ear for music does not give one a good ear for tuning. Tuning is a science and needs to be approached as such.

Grand Workshoppe offers the following tuning services:

  • Aural Tuning
  • Equal Temperament at Standard Pitch (A440)
  • Variable Pitching (A438, A442, A443, A 445, etc.) to meet your needs
  • Pitch Raising at no additional cost
  • Performance and Recording Tuning

 Piano Repair

Paino Repair and RegulationThe need for piano repairs exists across a broad spectrum. A piano is a complex instrument consisting of furniture, super structure, and a mechanical action. Pianos are made from materials that range from hardwood, softwood, exotic veneers, leather, felts, brass, nickel, copper, tempered steel, adhesives, fasteners, and more. A service technician must not only be familiar with piano design and mechanics but also with working with these materials.

It is always a good idea that a piano tuner also be trained as a piano service technician since they will confront pianos repairs on a daily basis. I consider it a travesty when I see customers charged for services that only fall into the scope of what the technician knows and not what the instrument requires. Think about that statement. Many times techs learn certain things but do not have the full picture. These partial bits of information can be viewed as a limited inventory of product that one is eager to sell you yet is not what you need to keep your instrument performing properly. I say this because I see, nearly every day, where money is wasted by poor judgment and limited abilities.

Grand Workshoppe offers:

  • Repair services covering all aspects of a piano
  • All services are provide by us in your home or in our shop in a timely manner
  • Any job is welcome no matter how small or how big
  • Parts we cannot get we make

We assess repairs frugally as if it is our own money we are spending and will never over-sell. We are always willing to roll up our sleves and do whatever the job requires.

Piano Restoration

Piano RebuildingPiano restoration is broken down into two categories:

1) Piano Reconditioning 2) Piano Rebuilding

Piano Rebuilding involves complete restoration of the instrument to return it to like new condition. Piano Reconditioning is repairing existing parts and bringing maintenance up to date.

My extensive training and four decades of experience enables me to handle all aspect of piano restoration in my own shop. I do not contract any aspect of work on your piano to another shop.

All jobs are assessed for value and you will be given a nutural unbiased opinion as to whether or not uou are making a good investment. I want to be sure that once complete your instrument provides you and your family with a life-time of service. If your instrument is not a good candidate for restoration, considering both quality and economics, I will not contract the job with you. The great Maestro, and one time friend/client, Cellist and Conductor Mstislav Rostropovich once got mad at me because I refuse to take his money to restore an instrument not worthy. He called me a “chicken”. I took plenty of his money restoring a whole fleet of other instruments for him.

Restoration Services offered by Grand Workshoppe:

  • Grand and Upright Action Repair and Reconditioning
  • Bridge Replacement
  • Keyboard Repair and Restoration
  • Pitch Raising

  • Rebuilding

 Piano Moving

Grand Piano MovingLike all other aspects of piano technology, piano moving is an art. An investment in professional piano moving is a very wise decision. Not only will it safeguard your investment but will also safeguard the well-being of yourself and your home.

Physical strength, determination, and a bribe of a six pack of beer do not qualify most individuals to become piano movers. Granted, there are cases where this is appropriate, and can even be fun, but there are technical aspects of this job that need to be recognized. Handling instruments that are both old and new can be tricky. Old pianos have delicate veneers, loose leg mounts, and fragile finishes, whereas new pianos need to look as new once delivered as they do before moving. Most damage found on older pianos has been caused by movers, not by age.

Piano moving varies in situations such as:

  • Disassembling, packing and loading
  • Deliver below grade, above grade, multiple stories
  • Unpacking and reassembling

A trained piano mover knows how to manipulate the weight of a piano upstairs, around corners, downstairs, and rigging onto hosting apparatus.

We have moved instruments across lakes (frozen and unfrozen), suspended through the air by cranes, through mud, snow, and ice, in remote rural setting, and busy big city urbanity. One must be prepared to handle any situation without fail.

We Offer The Following Moving Services:

  • Local house-to-House
  • In-House Room-to-Room
  • Thorughout New York State
  • Interstate

All pianos, any size, anywhere possible.
